LION OF THE WEEK

Week of August 21 to August 28, 2006

DENISE MANNING

I am the proud mother of my greatest joy and accomplishment, daughter Rachel Manning. I have lived in parts of 3 states, Indiana (my birthplace,) Kentucky (my "home" place) and now Tennessee. My 91 year-old-mother still lives alone in KY and my one sibling, sister Cherie, lives in Florida. My daughter graduated from Western KY University in Bowling Green, KY and currently resides there where she works for the university in special events. She followed in my footsteps and also teaches aerobics part-time. My faith and my family keep me afloat and mean the world to me.

I received a Bachelors degree in English from Eastern KY University, Richmond, KY. I taught high school English in Winchester, KY for 4 years at George Rogers Clark H.S. I came to Nashville to work for Atmos Energy (formerly United Cities Gas Company) and have completed my 21st year with the company. I love my current responsibilities with the company as Manager Public Affairs as I am privileged to meet many people from all walks of life. I love to talk and share experiences with close friends and even those I've just met. I learn so much from others, but most especially from the wisdom of my 29 year-old daughter.

I am on the Lions Club board of directors, serve as a Eucharistic Minister at St. Edwards Catholic Church in Nashville, and am involved with United Way of Williamson Co., the Williamson Co. Chamber of Commerce, the Maury Co. Alliance, and the Rutherford Co. Chamber. My hobby is cruising. I always take a cruise at least once a year with a family member, this year completing my 25th cruise. I love to cruise where it is warm, but also enjoyed the Alaskan cruises I have taken. I have seen parts of the world I never would have seen if not for cruising, and besides that, the FOOD and relaxation are unmatched!

I just moved to a new home in Brentwood, TN and am enjoying some remodeling and gardening work. I am an avid reader and currently am enjoying reading all books by Jodi Picoult. I like to entertain my friends with cooking from my maternal grandmother's home country of Czechoslovakia. Many of the traditions my family practices at Christmas time come from my grandmother.

I have been a member of the Lions Club for 5 years, having served as Chairman of the Sight Services Committee and 2nd and 1st Vice Presidents. "I joined the Lions Club to meet some movers and shakers in the community, and the club has afforded me that opportunity plus tons more. I love that the Lions Club has such a diverse membership because I learn from each of them and have made many lasting friendships. Our support of the community is so rewarding - probably as much for me as for those who receive the charitable work our club does. I would invite those young and old alike to come to one of our luncheon meetings and experience for yourself the joys and rewards of Lions Club membership."
